Fuel charges drop on Europe flights

As oil prices fall, both U.S. and foreign airlines are cutting fuel surcharges on most flights to Europe, a move that will save fliers $50 on flights to Paris, Rome and Madrid, and more than $60 on flights to London.

Tom Parsons, chief executive of the discount travel site Bestfares.com, has been tracking the surcharges since October 2007. He says the fuel fee from San Francisco and other West Coast cities to the majority of European cities has dropped from $330 round trip to $280 round trip, about 18 percent. London fuel surcharges that were at $428 round trip from the West Coast have dropped to $366 round trip, about 17 percent.

New Patterns in Green Flight

As globe-trotters are becoming more aware of the carbon footprint that flying produces, airlines are now vying to create “greener” flight systems to offset the tons of CO2 released into the atmosphere during each flight.

The BBC reported that Air New Zealand has just announced plans to test a 747 that will use biofuel in one of its four engines. Virgin Atlantic countered that it too has designs in the works for an eco-friendly plane, and is hoping to beat Air New Zealand to the tarmac, (though they have released fewer details about what exactly their plans entail). Both hope to have their engines revved up for 2008.

Beware-Connecting Flights from Athens

Here is one good reason not to fly back to Athens on the same day as your international flight….. missing a connecting flight to the US or any other destination because of a late connection could be a disaster!!

Stormy weather hits Greece
Violent storms throughout Saturday disrupted air and sea transport around Greece and obliged the fire service to pump water out of basements but did not result in any injuries.

A German charter flight that was carrying 244 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing at Athens International Airport after being struck by lightning. The aircraft had taken off from Hania, Crete. Two Olympic Airlines flights to Rhodes and Chios were forced to return to Athens because of the stormy weather over the Aegean.

Connecting to your flight Home?

The following brief article will give you an idea of why you shouldn’t try to connect to your flight home on a Greek domestic flight on the same day as your international departure. If you miss your flight home because a domestic flight was cancelled or delayed, it can become very inconvenient and possibly very expensive. An airline is only responsible for it’s own flights and to get you to and from the destination they’ve ticketed for. If one airline causes you to miss a flight on another airline you’re out of luck!(unless all flights are issued on the same ticket!)….
