More About Port Phillip Bay

Port Phillip Bay, aka the Bay to the locals, is a large bay in southern Victoria, Australia.

Geographically speaking, Port Phillip is a large marine bay 1,930 km² (476,900 acres) in area which has a coastline length of 264 km (164 miles). The bay is extremely shallow for its size, but navigable for the most part. The deepest portion is only 24 m (80 ft), and half the region is shallower than 8 m. Its volume is around 25 km³.

A comment by Mad Goat Lady (who produced a great article for us about a friendly fraser island four wheel drive hire company) on this post about a cranky sounding caravan park in Port Fairy inspired me to look for crayfish videos on Youtube. I only needed to look at one vid before feeling the urge to share it with you all. It features a badass turtle taking a crayfish to school… the cafeteria, to be specific!

Taipei 101

No, Taipei 101 is not an introductory class to the capital of Taiwan. Rather, it’s a building in the bustling Taiwanese city, and currently the tallest building in the world. But the 101-story building holds more than just one world record: It is also home to the world’s fastest elevator, rushing from the first floor to the observation deck on the 89th floor in 37 seconds (that’s 3,314 feet or 1,010 meters). Locals affectionately describe the building as resembling a tower of Chinese take-out containers.

Into the Wild: Tourist Attraction?

Chris McCandless, the 24-year-old vagabond who hiked into the Alaskan wilderness alone with a ten-pound bag of rice in 1992, never made it out of the wild, but the abandoned bus where he died of starvation just might—that is, if some Alaskans have their way.

The Toronto Star has the scoop: Alaskans are now bracing themselves for an influx of “McCandless pilgrims” (such as Marc Paterson, pictured) inspired by the release of the Sean Penn-directed film, Into the Wild, to trek the Stampede Trail, seeking out the infamous city bus where McCandless perished. Local residents in Healy, Alaska, are brainstorming ways to deal with the “unwanted tourist attraction.”
